Artist Statement

The focus of my work is informed by my consuming consideration of the subject of stress. The balancing act of coping, and ultimately coexisting, with stress is examined through the vocabulary of textiles. To focus and concentrate on meaningful content through active engagement in construction, such as hand weaving, felting and spinning; methods antithetical to the causes of contemporary stressors. The systematic nature of weaving as an organizational tool expresses our natural urge to find balance and structure. This time consuming process involves methodical repetition and order and as the foundational process it is representative of control as well as the continuous flow of time. The material choices and techniques utilized in the weaving process create variations and interruptions that are meant to express the incongruity of life’s stressors. Through the use of this visual language I explore the effects of mental, physical and emotional stress through personal experience.
